The Raiders’ offense is currently on a role. They have now scored at least 31 points in three-straight games and Derek Carr is playing arguably the best football of his career. Nelson Agholor continues to be a revelation and Darren Waller.
However, one part of the offense they can’t seem to figure out is how to use Henry Ruggs III. Over the last five games, Ruggs has a combined 12 touches on offense. Worst yet, he’s seen only 14 targets during that span.
With so many other rookie receivers dominating, such as CeeDee Lamb, Justin Jefferson and Chase Claypool, it’s hard not to wonder why the Raiders can’t get similar production from Ruggs. But the truth of the matter is that they just haven’t needed him.
The offense is clicking right now and when Carr does drop back to throw, Waller continues to be his favorite option. After that, it’s a combination of Nelson Agholor and Hunter Renfrow. Outside of those three targets, there just isn’t a lot of volume left for the rest of the passing targets.
As the season goes along, the hope would be that Ruggs’ role in the offense would grow. But as of right now, he’s a highly-drafted decoy. If and when the Raiders finally figure out a way to utilize Ruggs to the fullest of his abilities, there is no telling just how good this offense can be. His time is coming, but might not be this season.
Look for Ruggs to see a few touches on offense each week over the next six games, but for the team to expand his role greatly in 2021 and beyond. There still is a lot to love about the No. 12 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft as he has shown the ability to create huge chunk plays on offense. It’s going to take time for Jon Gruden and company to fully incorporate him into this offense.
