Boston Celtics second-year forward Grant Williams’ favorite player makes a lot of sense, when you look at his game.
The Tennessee product pulled over to the shoulder to do a Q & A session with fellow Volunteer alumni last week (safety first!) between errands while on a trip out to the west coast, and the topic of his favorite player growing up was raised as a question.
The deceptively strong swingman has already carved a niche out for himself in the Celtics’ rotation with his outstanding, reliable defense for a rookie, even earning floor time in critical moments of closeout games deep in the postseason, glimpses of his favorite player from that era of his life evident.
“I think that was more so Draymond Green,” answered Williams when the question was posed to him. “As everyone knows, he was my favorite player when I was going to high school [and] college.”
“It was definitely a moment for me when I played against him for the first time. I’ve met him before, so playing against him was unique, but every other guy is just a competitor of me. And I’m like ‘Okay, I just want to take on the challenge.’ So, no matter who I was playing, there’s a bunch of names — Giannis [Antetokounmpo], Pascal [Siakam], those guys — I’m like ‘I’m playing against them, cool. Let’s just compete and get this win.’
“It was definitely an interesting time,” he added.

You’ll have to watch the whole interview yourself (embedded above) to catch the other details about who Williams had plans to play some friendlies with on his west coast trip.
It’s worth the watch if you’re a fan of Grant, his Vols, or just the Celtics overall.
The General — as Williams is sometimes called — has already made quite a name for himself among his peers, but still stays connected to the fans who got in on the ground floor.
