The Philadelphia 76ers are getting ready for the NBA draft that is set to take place on November 18, but soon thereafter, free agency is set to begin. It will be a wild time in the NBA, even for the Sixers who don’t have too much money to spend.
Due to the contracts given out in the 2019 offseason and the nature of their salary cap situation, the Sixers only have roughly $6 million to play with in the free agent market. With that money, they can make maybe two moves at the most to try and upgrade the roster.
One guy who would fit the team’s needs of shooting and ball-handling would be Yogi Ferrell. After a solid start to his NBA career where he shot at least 37% from deep in his first two seasons, that number dipped to 36.2% and then 30.4% in these previous two seasons with the Sacramento Kings. He can come cheap looking for a new opportunity on a contender.
The Athletic’s John Hollinger had this to say on Ferrell’s free agency prospects:
Although Ferrell was largely forgotten in Sacramento the past two seasons, his results suggest he’s still playable. And he’s only 27. As a small, shoot-first guy, finding the right fit will be important. While my valuation model says he’s worth a bit more, he’s almost certainly looking at a minimum contract.
Ferrell definitely fits the mold of a shoot-first point guard. He can get to the basket and he has a smooth pull-up jumper which would be nice on this team. Also, the Sixers would not ask too much of him. His job would be to come off the bench and provide some strong play on offense and knock down open looks. [lawrence-related id=38922,38915,38912]
