Virginia Tech stunned by Liberty after timeout erases game-winning FG block return

Liberty stunned Virginia Tech in an absolutely wild ending.

Liberty and Virginia Tech delivered one of the wildest endings of the 2020 college football season on Saturday afternoon in Blacksburg.

The Hokies were huge home favorites to beat the ranked No. 25 Flames, but Liberty kept the game close throughout, and overcame a six-point halftime deficit to have a shot at winning the game with a 51-yard field goal as time expired.

With the game tied 35-35, Liberty kicker Alex Barbir attempted the game winner, but had his kick blocked and returned for what would have been a game-winning touchdown.

There’s just one problem: Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuentes called a timeout just before the kick occurred, wiping out his team’s incredible special teams play.

Barbir got a second chance to win the game, and drilled the 51-yarder to give Liberty a signature win over their in-state rivals. College football fans couldn’t believe it.
