The Kansas City Chiefs have a stranglehold over the No. 2 spot in Touchdown Wire’s power rankings following Week 8. After ascending to that spot in last week’s power rankings, the Chiefs have dug in, remaining the No. 2 team after a dominant win over the New York Jets.
The only thing holding them back from regaining the No. 1 spot is the fact that the Pittsburgh Steelers have yet to lose a game this season. They’re bound to slip up eventually, though. And so long as the Chiefs continue to win games, they’ll be in a prime position to regain the top spot.
As Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar noted this week, the Chiefs got a bit scarier with Patrick Mahomes’ performance. Check out what he had to say:
“What might scare the rest of the NFL is this: Patrick Mahomes completed five passes of at least 25 yards to four different receivers, with four going for touchdowns. Mahomes finished the day having completed 31 of 42 passes for 416 yards and five touchdowns.
And that might not have been the best throw of the day from a Kansas City player. Punter Tommy Townsend might have earned that accolade”
Let me stop you if you’re thinking, “So what if Mahomes did well? It’s the Jets.”
This isn’t about the opponent or even Mahomes for that matter. Last week, the defense and special teams stepped up. This week the offense really shined for Kansas City. The Chiefs can beat you in a variety of different ways any given week and they’re recognizing that.
If the run game is getting stuffed, they’ll air it out and vice versa. If the offense is stumbling, their No. 3 scoring defense and resurgent special teams unit have the ability to impact the scoreboard. Kansas City looks to have one of the more complete teams in the NFL and that’s what’s so scary about Mahomes’ performance. It’s just another way that the Chiefs can crush their opponent’s dreams as they vie to become repeat Super Bowl champions.
