Former Celtic champ Sam Cassell to join Doc Rivers on 76ers

Former Boston Celtics champion guard Sam Cassell will join former coach, boss Doc Rivers as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Ex-Boston Celtic reserve guard Sam Cassell will join his former coach and boss on the Philadelphia 76ers’ staff as an assistant coach according to the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Keith Pompeii.

Cassell, who won a title with the Celtics in 2008 under Doc Rivers’ tenure as head coach, had been working under the former Boston coach in that role for the Los Angeles Clippers until Rivers stepped down as head coach for that organization this offseason.

The former Celtics coach quickly landed on his feet, securing the same position with the 76ers, and now Cassell will join his staff, which includes former NBA head coach Dave Joerger and new team president Daryl Morey, who recently left the Houston Rockets in the same capacity.

Philly seems hell-bent to make postseason noise with the supporting cast they’ve assembled of savvy winners.

And while Cassell may not have landed a head coaching gig of his own, a modicum of success in his new role will certainly add momentum to that happening for him down the road.
