Through their first six games, the Jets — led by head coach and alleged offensive genius Adam Gase — held their position as the NFL’s most pathetic team. Heading into their Week 7 matchup with the Bills, Gase’s team was the only one in the league without a win, and that offense ranked 31st in Football Outsiders’ opponent-adjusted efficiency metrics. Only the Giants have been worse.
But, there is a bit of good news for beleaguered Jets fans: Per multiple reports, Gase will not be calling offensive plays, at least in the near term. This may be the precursor to Gase’s seemingly inevitable firing, or it could be a last-ditch effort for Gase to save his job. Offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains has taken the wheel.
Things worked out early for the Jets, as quarterback Sam Darnold, returning from a shoulder injury that sidelined him in Week 4, drove the ball 62 yards on 11 plays, with four first downs, in a drive that ended in a 29-yard Sergio Castillo field goal.
We’ll see how this goes — Loggains won’t bring any Bill Walsh comparisons, but anything is better than having Gase roll his rusty, busted offense out there once again to his team’s great embarrassment.
