When the Brooklyn Nets parted ways with Kenny Atkinson back in March, everyone in and around the league seemed to think he was going to find a head coaching job elsewhere. It wasn’t a crazy conclusion to draw, given what he’d done in Brooklyn during his time as head coach.
Atkinson was reportedly in on two head coaching search. He was in consideration for the Chicago Bulls job but lost out to former Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Billy Donovan. He was also linked to the Houston Rockets opening at one point, but nothing has come of that yet.
So, it appears Atkinson may need to take on a different role within an organization if he wants a job in the NBA next season. According to Marc Stein of the New York Times, that’s exactly what’s in the cards for Atkinson.
Stein is reporting Atkinson “has emerged as a strong candidate to join new head coach Ty Lue’s staff with the [Los Angeles] Clippers.”
