The Boston Celtics revealed in a press release that starting center Daniel Theis underwent successful surgery in a press release circulated by the team Wednesday afternoon.
Theis reportedly “underwent a successful arthroscopic procedure on his left knee, including removal of a loose body” on Tuesday, with team physician Dr. Tony Schena at New England Baptist Hospital, per the release.
The Celtics shared that the procedure is not expected to impede the German big man’s participation in training camp this offseason.
The Salzgitter native has previously had surgery on the same knee for a meniscal tear in 2018.
News of the surgery came as a surprise, given it was not known there was a need for it nor any specific injuries obviously pointing to it during the 2019-2020 NBA restart at Disney’s Lake Buena Vista campus.
Theis did seem out of his game as the team advanced through the 2020 Playoffs, but was still playing at a high level that did not suggest surgery was imminent — it could be that a loose body was found floating around after the season, or that the team kept the injury under wraps for unknown reasons.
Whatever the case, we wish Theis a speedy rehabilitation.
