During Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst’s Monday morning press conference, the QB room was the story following a report from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel of Jack Coan suffering a foot injury in Saturday’s practice.
After confirming Coan’s injury and providing additional details surrounding how it took place, Chryst went on to mention who has been taking the first-team reps in practice.
“Graham [Mertz] is taking all the reps with the ones,” noted Chryst when asked about who would step in behind Coan.
To nobody’s surprise, it is the redshirt-freshman Mertz who is ready to take the reigns for as long as Coan is out. The four-star 2019 recruit is the highest-rated Wisconsin QB signee in the modern era of recruiting. Although the Badgers will be without their leader, Mertz flashed next-level ability at the high school level that should have UW fans feeling that this team is still in the Big Ten West driver’s seat.
