Steve Nash got the job in Brooklyn over quite a few candidates who have some form of coaching experience — of which, he has none.
But for everything Ty Lue and others brought to the table, none of Nash’s competition for the job had quite the pedigree Doc Rivers has. Of course, the new Philadelphia 76ers head coach wasn’t an option when the Nets conducted their search. Furthermore, the Nets seem more than pleased with Nash.
But Cedric Maxwell thinks Brooklyn missed out.
“I don’t like Steve Nash because he’s a young coach who hasn’t had a team with two guys that from time to time — and let’s say it the way it is — can be devious,” 1981 NBA Finals MVP turned Celtics radio analyst said during his recent appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Toucher & Rich” in Boston. “I would have rather had Doc Rivers in that situation, because I think that dealing with egos, he’s better equipped at doing it because he’s done it before. He did it with Paul [Pierce]; he did it with Kevin [Garnett], he did it with Ray [Allen].
“So, I don’t like that situation. I would have rather had Doc Rivers in Brooklyn than in Philadelphia. But I think Philadelphia did a great job of picking up a guy who is a player’s coach, and I think he’ll help them,”
