KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

Vols Wire is taking a look at each date that Tennessee has played on in its program history.

The Volunteers have played 14 times on this date and have had success, compiling a record of 9-3-2.

UT first played on Oct. 2 in 1909 and tied Centre College, 0-0, in Knoxville.

The Vols shut out Tusculum, 21-0, in 1915. The game was played in Knoxville. In 1920, the Volunteers routed Maryville College 47-0. The Vols knocked off North Carolina, 34-0, in 1926.

Virginia Tech and Tennessee collided on the gridiron in 1937 with the Vols capturing a 27-0 victory over the Hokies.

In 1948, UT played Duke in Durham and tied the Blue Devils 7-7. 1954 saw the Vols lose to the Blue Devils, 7-6.

In 1971, Tennessee edged Florida 20-13. The Vols outlasted Clemson, 21-19, in 1976.

In 1982, UT earned a 10-3 victory over Washington State in a defensive struggle.

Tennessee routed Duke, 52-19, in 1993.

In 1999, Tennessee shut out Auburn 24-0. 2004 saw the Tigers topple the Big Orange, 34-10.

Tennessee last played on Oct. 2 in 2010 when they lost a 14-12 heartbreaker at LSU.
