KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football in 1891.

Vols Wire is taking a look at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in its program history.

The Volunteers have had 17 games on this date and have a record of 12-4-1.

Tennessee first played on Oct. 1 in 1904 and the Vols shut out Maryville College, 17-0.

In 1910, UT lost to Centre College 17-2. In 1921, the Vols made a trip to Blount County and edged Maryville 7-0.

In 1927, Tennessee beat North Carolina 26-0. The Vols shut out Ole Miss, 33-0, in 1932. In 1938 the Vols toppled Clemson, 20-7.

Tennessee lost to Duke twice on Oct. 1, losing both games in Durham. The Blue Devils downed the Vols, 21-7, in 1949. Duke shut out UT, 21-0, in 1955.

In 1960, Tennessee and Mississippi State played to a scoreless tie. In 1966, the Big Orange defeated Rice 23-3.

1977 saw Tennessee route Oregon State, 41-0. In 1983, Tennessee and The Citadel played in Memphis with the Big Orange leaving West Tennessee with a 45-6 win.

In 1988, Washington State toppled Tennessee 52-24. In 1994, the Cougars and Vols met again with UT prevailing 10-9.

In 2005, Tennessee routed Ole Miss 27-10. 2011 saw the Vols down Buffalo, 41-10.

The Vols last played on Oct. 1 in 2016 and they edged Georgia 34-31 in Athens.
