The Jets are sick of losing — and understandably so.
New York has not been competitive in its first three games of 2020. The Jets only lost to the Bills by 10 points, but the final score did not reflect Buffalo’s dominance for four quarters in Week 1. The 49ers buried New York in only 13 seconds in Week 2, while the Colts handed Gang Green a 29-point loss this past weekend.
The Jets haven’t just been losing games. They have been getting embarrassed on a weekly basis. Because of New York’s struggles, Adam Gase is firmly on the hot seat and his players are less than pleased with the early outcome of the season — especially Sam Darnold, who has also caught a lot of heat for his poor play.
“I could see it on his face after the last game, he was pissed,” Gase said of Darnold on Tuesday, per NorthJersey.com’s Andy Vasquez. “He was not only mad at the score, but how it went down. I think they’re pissed.”
As for Gase himself, he is refusing to get caught up in New York’s dismal start. As long as he is the head coach, it is his job to get his team ready to play, not sulk about past defeats and dwell about his future job security.
“I can’t focus on that,” Gase said. “It’s all wasted energy for me. It’s not going to help me at all. All I can do is make sure I get our guys in the right headspace to go out there on Thursday and play well.”
If Gase can’t get his players in the right headspace to defeat the Broncos on Thursday Night Football, his time in the Big Apple could be up. According to a report to by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen prior to New York’s Week 3 loss, Jets executives were evaluating Gase over the next two games. Considering how poorly things went against the Colts, a loss to Denver could be the final straw in his tenure as head coach.
