The Philadelphia 76ers are currently searching for their first new head coach in seven years after firing Brett Brown way back on August 24. It was then when it appeared that former Cleveland Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue was going to be the frontrunner for the job.
However, the Houston Rockets then parted ways with coach Mike D’Antoni and he immediately caught the eye of the Sixers. The fit is a bit interesting due to his small-ball philosophy and Philadelphia being anything, but small, but maybe he can enhance the team’s offense and make it come alive.
According to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Keith Pompey, the job is D’Antoni’s to lose despite Lue’s upcoming interview:
Lue is scheduled to interview for the job on Tuesday, according to multiple sources. One has to wonder if he thinks his meeting could just be a formality and/or insurance in case former Houston Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni, whose job it is to lose, doesn’t accept the job.
D’Antoni is a coach that has had a ton of success in the league. He hasn’t won a championship like Lue has, but he is the godfather of pace and space, and the teams he has been a coach of generally do well. He already has received star big man Joel Embiid’s blessing so that is a big thing for the team and for D’Antoni, in general. [lawrence-related id=37840,37917,37932]
