KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

The Vols have been mediocre on Sept. 20 throughout its storied football history. UT has a winning record, going 4-3 in games contested on this date.

The Big Orange first played on Sept. 20 in 1941. Tennessee defeated Furman, 32-6, in that game in Knoxville.

In 1969, the Volunteers shut out Chattanooga 31-0.

Tennessee first lost on Sept. 20 in 1975 to UCLA, 34-28 in Los Angeles.

In 1980, The Vols hosted Washington State and notched a 35-23 victory over the Cougars at Neyland Stadium.

UT has played Florida three times on Sept. 20. The Vols are 1-2 in those Southeastern Conference East Division games.

The Vols and Gators have split a pair of games in Gainesville, while Florida has won in Knoxville.

In 1997, the Gators beat the Volunteers 33-20 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. In 2003, Tennessee left Gainesville with a 24-10 victory.

Florida routed the Vols in Knoxville, 30-6, at Neyland Stadium in 2008.
