New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton seems to have won over his coaches, his teammates and his fanbase after his Week 1 performance against the Miami Dolphins. Even though the prospect of replacing Tom Brady should seem like a herculean task, Newton has provided an air of nonchalance, with an ease in everything he does on and off the field. His leadership seems to be a huge anchor in New England.
He was asked what leadership meant to him.
“It’s just holding yourself accountable, and that’s what I try to do, whether it’s via words or via actions,” Newton told reporters on Wednesday. “I have to make sure that I’m not being selfish and not thinking about the team and knowing that I am putting the team first in a lot of things I do. Like I said, whether it’s leading by example or just giving a pep talk, we all can lead. But in order to be a great leader, you also have to be a great follower and there’s a lot of guys on this team that I follow and see from a far and just get the little nuggets with how they prepare and just work on a day-to-day basis. I’m trying to put in my repertoire of living each and every day.”
