Titans’ Corey Davis: ‘Me and Tanny were clicking’ in Week 1

For the first time since 2018, Davis had seven catches and 100 yards in a single game.

One point of emphasis Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill had this offseason was to improve his chemistry with wide receiver Corey Davis, and if Week 1 was any indication, their connection has grown stronger.

Tannehill connected with Davis seven times on eight targets for 101 yards. Davis’ receptions and yards were tops among all Titans pass-catchers, and it was the first time since Week 10 of 2018 that Davis had broken the century mark or finished with seven catches in a game.

Among Davis’ highlights was a sensational toe-tap catch near the sideline against Denver Broncos cornerback A.J. Bouye, and he also stiff-armed safety Kareem Jackson into another dimension on another play.

Following the win over the Broncos on Monday night, Davis, who wasn’t 100 percent going into the game after suffering a hamstring injury during the week, said he and Tannehill were on the same page, per Jim Wyatt of Titans Online.

“If I am going to travel, … my mindset is ‘I’m traveling, it’s a business trip, so I am going to go out there and play.’ I was questionable, but I had it in my mind I was going to play,” Davis said.

“It just felt good to get the game ball. It was a long road for me personally, so to have coaches and players believe in me all the way through, it meant a lot. Personally, I felt good going out there. Me and Tanny were clicking, and I’m happy we got the W.”

Head coach Mike Vrabel noted how proud he was of Davis that he was able suit up and play at less than 100 percent.

“I’m really proud of his effort to get himself to this game,” Vrabel said of Davis. “I think admittedly, he’s probably not at 100-percent, but I was happy to present him with a game ball in there in front of the team for his effort, toughness and competitiveness.”

One noticeable difference in the way the Titans used Davis on Monday night as compared to in the past was his targets over the middle, which is something we saw a lot of during training camp.

The 2020 campaign will be the most important of Davis’ career as he prepares to hit free agency after the Titans declined his fifth-year option during the offseason.

Now that he and Tannehill appear to be more in sync and fellow wideout A.J. Brown is getting extra attention, Davis is setup to have his best season as a pro at the perfect time.
