KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

Vols Wire is looking at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in the program’s history.

September 13

The Volunteers have a losing record in games contested on this date, going 2-3.

UT first played on Sept. 13 in 1975. The Big Orange, coached by Bill Battle, hosted a Maryland team that was ranked No. 14 in the nation. The Vols prevailed, 28-6, at Neyland Stadium over the Terrapins.

In 1980, the Vols played host to the University of Southern California and eventual Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Allen, who would win the award the following season.

The Trojans left Knoxville with a 20-17 victory.

In 1986, the Vols lost to Southeastern Conference foe Mississippi State, 25-23, at home. That is UT’s only SEC game to be played on Sept.13.

In 2008, the Vols defeated UAB, 35-3, at Neyland Stadium.

Tennessee last played on Sept. 14 in 2014 against Oklahoma. The Vols lost to the Sooners, 34-10.
