Months of building excitement led to a lopsided victory on Saturday night, as Oklahoma defeated Missouri State 48-0 in their season opener.
Spencer Rattler was at the center of an offensive supernova for Lincoln Riley and the Sooners.
Rattler met the occasion with rare fortitude for a redshirt freshman. The former five-star went 14-for-17 for 290 yards and four touchdowns, all in just the first half of the contest.
Rattler threw deep bombs of over 50 yards to Charleston Rambo and Marvin Mims for the second and third touchdowns of the game. Mims was one of the top receivers on the night, nabbing three catches for 80 yards and one score.
Tanner Mordecai was at the helm for the Sooners in the second half. He threw one interceptions in the endzone early, but bounced back to throw a touchdown pass to Finn Corwin.
True freshman Seth McGowan paved the way on the ground for OU, rushing for eight yards on 56 carries and a one-yard touchdown to get the game started off.
Oklahoma out-gained Missouri State 608-136 in total.
Defensively, Alex Grinch couldn’t have asked for much more.
Led by sophomore linebacker Brian Asamoah, the Sooners didn’t allow MSU even a look at the endzone, pitching a shutout and allowing the Bears to gain just 136 yards in total. Asamoah led the team with seven total tackles.
Safety Delarrin Turner-Yell evened the turnover battle with an interception near the end of the third quarter.
