This is an important offseason coming up for the Philadelphia 76ers as they have to correct the mistakes made in the 2019 offseason. They made a questionable move of acquiring big man Al Horford in free agency and the fit of having two bigs on the offensive end was clunky and tough to get through.
So, in order to fix that mistake, the team decided to move Horford to the bench once the season resumed in the bubble and moved Ben Simmons to the power forward spot and young Shake Milton at point guard. The move yielded early results, but Simmons’ injury forced Horford back into the starting lineup as Philadephia was swept out of Round 1 of the playoffs.
Now, they have a chance to fix their mistake as it appears that an elite point guard will be available for trade in the form of Oklahoma City Thunder veteran Chris Paul. The Thunder parted ways with coach Billy Donovan on Tuesday night and some believe that this signals the beginning of a Thunder rebuild.
Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer reports that the Sixers have thought about making a trade for Paul in the offseason. They would be part of a potential 3-team trade between themselves plus the Milwaukee Bucks who would be looking to retool after a semifinals loss.
O’Connor reports:
The trouble is that Oklahoma City likely prefers not to take on long-term salary, so a third team could be required. The Bucks would likely face competition in any pursuit of Paul. League sources say the Sixers front office has seriously debated the idea of chasing CP3.
Paul would be an absolutely perfect fit in Philadelphia as a guy who can shoot the ball, a clutch performer, and he is an elite point guard. His ability to efficiently run an offense as well as take over when the time calls for it is something the Sixers sorely lacked this season. If general manager Elton Brand has the resources and the chance to pull off an acquisition such as this one, it must be taken for Philadelphia to have the success they need on offense.
