This offseason has been one of the most odd and trying times in recent memory. March 13, 2020 is the day that sports died. It has been 180 days since Texas athletics have been on a field, court or diamond. This Saturday it will finally come to an end, at least that is the hope right now. Texas senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger met with media on Tuesday and he shared that same thought process.
“I still got my fingers crossed that we get to Saturday,” Ehlinger said in a hopeful manner. “I know how quickly things can pop up. So I guess that’s a little shaky there. We’re just very grateful to get to play on Saturday. Everything feels pretty normal from a football standpoint and we’re just excited to get back out there and play someone else other than ourselves.”
Given the fact that three of the scheduled Big 12 nonconference games have been postponed, Ehlinger couldn’t be more dead on. One should believe that the entire Texas Longhorns fanbase have their collective fingers crossed. With a little over 72 hours to kickoff, team and fans alike are probably pretty nervous.
The one thing about college football and sports in general is that this is an opportunity to bring people together. Fans of different upbringings, different backgrounds and social statuses coming together for their passion. The game of football. Ehlinger believes that this is a great opportunity for just that, bringing a nation together.
“This football season is a lot different than previous ones when I’ve been here.” Ehlinger continues, “I hope that this year can bring back a sense of normalcy to America and show people that we’re still a very strong country. I know it’s been very hard with everything going on, being at home and not being able to return to normal life. But I also hope that college football and our team can show America what happens when people from different backgrounds come together for one goal. It shows people that we’re no different. As a team, and with love and everything that a team has, you can accomplish really cool things.
