Jim Harbaugh said on Saturday that ‘maybe, possibly’ Michigan football could take the field come October.

Well, the man who first reported Oct. 10 as a possible Big Ten start date not only threw some cold water on that scenario, he more than intimated that no matter when the conference resumes play that Michigan won’t be a part of it.

Dan Patrick, the former ESPN personality and current radio host, has had some good sources through all of this, and though he made it sound like the conference was close to resuming in recent weeks, he’s now saying that if it does, it likely won’t be until either November or January and that Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois, Northwestern, Maryland and Rutgers are likely to sit out, regardless.

“The Big Ten is still up in the air,” Patrick said. “If you were not with us in the first hour, I gave you an update from my source that there’s still a pushback from the medical community in the Big Ten to not play. I was told they simply don’t have enough teams to play.

“I was told that the Michigan teams — not gonna play. Illinois teams — that’s Illinois and Northwestern — are not gonna play. Maryland’s not gonna play. And Rutgers probably won’t play. That doesn’t leave you with much if you’re able to pull this off.

”And now, I’m told that the medical community within the Big Ten is trying to push to November now. It was Oct. 10, that was the target date so that they could get in a 10-game schedule and qualify for the postseason. I don’t think that’s gonna happen.”

If the league was to resume and the Michigan schools sit out, there would certainly be an uproar from the fan bases, given that the governor recently decreed that high school football can resume safely at this juncture.

All eyes are on U-M President Dr. Mark Schlissel, who voted no on a Big Ten season, but welcomed back the bulk of the student populace for classes which began on Aug. 31.

Meanwhile, there has been a slate of games the past two weekends, while the Power Five starts action on Thursday, with the ACC and Big 12 starting to take the field.
