DE J.J. Watt says Texans are ‘lucky to have’ QB Deshaun Watson

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt says the organization and city is “lucky to have” quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson signed a four-year contract extension worth $160 million that keeps him with his original draft team through the 2025 season.

The two-time Pro Bowler will earn between $39 and $40 million a year, making his contract second-most in annual money only to the Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes’ $45 million.

Texans defensive end J.J. Watt took to Twitter Saturday soon after reports surfaced that Watson would be agreeing to an extension with Houston.

“Yessirrrrrrrr!!!!” Watt exclaimed. “We’re lucky to have this one in Houston. A very well-deserved payday my friend! Can’t wait for the world to see what the future holds.”

Watt has been impressed with the way Watson has been able to transition from a national champion at Clemson to one of the top-10 best at his position, even with just three years under his belt.

“He’s done a good job with it,” Watt told reporters on Aug. 14. “He understands the situation he’s in. Like you said, he’s come from a situation where he has won national championships. He’s been there for the Heisman. He’s done all of those things, so he’s kind of built up that reputation. He’s also lived through it, so he knows how to handle big moments. He knows how to handle those situations and not let it get to him and not let it knock him off his course. The work always comes first, and I think he does a good job with that and he does a good job with our team.”

The team did a good job with Watson, keeping him under contract and a part of their plans through the next half of the decade. If the Texans can keep productive talent around Watson, or find ways to add even more, Houston should vie for more than division titles in the next few seasons.
