The Cincinnati Bengals decided to part ways with quarterback Brandon Allen while trimming the roster to 53 players Saturday.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the news.

Allen joined the team via free agency as the fourth man on the depth chart for training camp. He came over largely due to past experience with Bengals head coach Zac Taylor due to their time together on the Los Angeles Rams.

The move doesn’t come as a surprise with Ryan Finley still positioned as the main backup on the depth chart behind Joe Burrow. Whether that means Jake Dolegala is safe as the third depends on whether the team wants to roster three quarterbacks and sacrifice depth elsewhere.

Either way, the Bengals could still have some flexibility in this department if they move one passer to the practice squad and quarantine them as an emergency option for this unorthodox season. Allen is eligible for the practice squad if he clears waivers.
