Report: Packers cutting OLB Tim Williams

The Packers made a surprise cut at OLB, releasing Tim Williams, a former third-round pick of the Ravens.

The Green Bay Packers must be comfortable with the young players behind highly productive edge rushers Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith.

The Packers released outside linebacker Tim Williams on Saturday, according to Terez Paylor of Yahoo Sports.

Williams, once a third-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens, arrived in Green Bay last year and enjoyed a strong summer, making his release a moderate surprise as GM Brian Gutekunst trims his roster to 53 players.

The Packers will move forward with several young players, with seventh-round pick Jonathan Garvin now the most likely candidate to be the No. 4 outside linebacker behind the two Smiths and Rashan Gary.

The Packers also have Randy Ramsey and undrafted free agents Tipa Galeai and Delontae Scott at outside linebacker. Galeai had impressive moments during camp and could stick as the fifth edge rusher.

Williams could return on the practice squad if he passes through waivers.
