Report: Damien Harris could miss Week 1 with a hand injury

Tough luck for a running back who seemed on the verge of breaking out.

New England Patriots running back Damien Harris is in danger of missing Week 1 with a hand injury, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

Harris put together an impressive training camp, which has him in the mix to split time with Sony Michel as the team’s top running back. But it seems this injury could cast doubt on his ability to contribute for the season-opener against the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 13. Because NFL teams don’t have to release injury reports until next week, the team has not disclosed his injury. However, he has missed the last two practices.

Prior to the injury, it was clear he was impressing his coaches with his work at training camp. Harris was taking the bulk of the team’s snaps, with Michel and Lamar Miller starting camp on the physically unable to perform list.

“From what we’ve seen, and the training camp (Harris has) had, I tell you what, he’s pretty exciting,” Patriots running back coach Ivan Fears told reporters.

New England has running backs Michel, Harris, Lamar Miller, James White, Rex Burkhead and J.J. Taylor on the roster.
