As NFL teams are locking down foundational players to contract extensions, Bears fans are waiting for their team to lock down a fundamental part of the offense in wide receiver Allen Robinson to a long-term deal.
Robinson, who is entering the final year of his deal with the Bears, is coming off an impressive season where he recorded a career-best 98 receptions for 1,147 yards and seven touchdowns. He’s made it clear that he wants to be in Chicago for the long-term. But, as we know, it’s a two-way street.
Robinson addressed the topic of a potential extension with the Bears. But, unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like the two sides are close to getting a deal done. For Robinson, all he can do is focus on what he can control: football.
“That’s pretty much out of my control,” Robinson said of extension talks. “Again, I can’t pinpoint anything like that. Even for me, I’ve said this before, it’s out of my concern. Last time I came in here, we had a month before a game. Now it’s 12 days or something like that. My main focus is on Detroit and this year, and I truly mean that. Any contract things change, I don’t really have an answer for that.”
Matt Nagy was asked about Robinson being in the Bears’ long-term plans, and there’s no doubt that he’d prefer to keep the receiver in Chicago for the foreseeable future.
“I hope so,” Nagy said. “I think he shows what he can do. For us, that’s Ryan and Joey. That’s their world, that’s Allen’s world. We understand there’s a whole process to that. But I know how we all feel, I know how he feels. When you produce the way that he produces and the type of person he is, those are the type of people that you want for a while.”
But, as Nagy indicated, that’s up to general manager Ryan Pace to get a deal done. And considering how valuable Robinson is to this offense and this team overall, it seems like an easy decision for Pace. All he needs to do is pull the trigger.
