Barclays Center became the latest NBA arena to become a 2020 Election Day polling site. The news was announced outside of the Nets’ home arena in Brooklyn on Tuesday with the New York Board of Elections.
Turning arenas into voting centers became an NBA initiative after the brief hiatus in the Disney bubble that was sparked by the Milwaukee Bucks’ protest of Game 5 of their first-round series against the Orlando Magic:
In every city where the league franchise owns and controls the arena property, team governors will continue to work with the local elections officials to convert the facility into a voting location for the 2020 general election to allow for a safe in-person voting option for communities vulnerable to COVID. If a deadline has passed, team governors will work with local elections officials to find another election-related use for the facility, including but not limited to voter registration and ballot receiving boards.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and New York City Council Majority Leader Laurie Cumbo were both in attendance for the announcement.
