Jalen Ramsey has been seeking a contract extension for more than a year, both from the Jacksonville Jaguars and now the Los Angeles Rams. He has yet to hear an offer he and his agent like enough to accept, and so the negotiations have been ongoing.
The Rams have been talking to Ramsey’s agent since the trade happened in October, and both sides are hoping to get something done before the start of the season. This is the time when the Rams typically get contracts done, but time is ticking as Week 1 is rapidly approaching.
Sean McVay was asked about Ramsey’s deal on Wednesday after practice and he made it clear that while talks have continued, he’s not worried about the situation impacting his All-Pro cornerback on the field.
Here’s what McVay said, as transcribed by The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue.
“I think those are things that we are working through. He’s got a great agent that has been really good to work with. Obviously, Jalen is focused on playing football. Those are things that we are trying to handle kind of behind the scenes, if you will. But I think one thing we all know is Jalen is so refreshingly secure in himself and confident that it would be great if it gets done, but also you know this guy is not going to be distracted by what is or isn’t done. He’s going to go out and try to continue to demonstrate why he’s the best in the league at what he does.”
As for McVay’s feelings about Ramsey’s contract status, he said “it is something that we’d like to be able to work through.” But at the same time, McVay doesn’t “get the feeling that he’ll let anything really deter from his ability to play football.”
It sounds like much of the same of what we’ve heard from McVay, Les Snead and Ramsey in recent weeks and months, but both sides seem to be motivated to get a deal done.
Ramsey sure isn’t stressing about it, telling reporters at the start of camp that he instructed his agent not to talk to him about the contract until it’s done.
Things seem to be heading in the right direction as the season approaches, and it seems there’s little concern about Ramsey not being a member of the Rams for the foreseeable future.
