NBA to push back CBA termination window; may delay draft, start of FA

The NBA draft and start of free agency may be delayed as the league and union grapple with starting the 2020-21 season later than planned.

The NBA and National Basketball Players Association agreed to push back the collective bargaining agreement termination window, and is considering delaying the draft and start of free agency as well, according to ESPN.

Pushing back the CBA window would allow the league and union to better project the impact of the coronavirus on future revenue and the league itself, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, who reported the news Tuesday.

The new deadline to modify the CBA will be Oct. 15. The original deadline had previously been extended to Sept. 10, according to Wojnarowski.

There may also be another change to the draft date and the start of free agency.

The league is “moving toward” delaying both, according to Wojnarowski.

The draft is currently scheduled for Oct. 16 and the start of free agency for Oct. 18.

This comes as the league and union grapple with the idea of pushing back the starting date of the 2020-21 season. Wojnarowski wrote that there is a “strong likelihood” that the tentative start date of Dec. 1 will be pushed back.

Both the league and union would like to delay the season because of the revenue that will be missed if fans are not allowed to be in attendance. About 40% of revenue comes from game-night receipts, Commissioner Adam Silver told Wojnarowski.

The Oklahoma City Thunder hold the No. 25 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.
