Report: Sixers fire coach Brett Brown after 7 seasons at the helm

The Philadelphia 76ers have fired coach Brett Brown after seven seasons on the job.

Well, it has finally happened. This is the day that a lot of fans have been waiting for and hoping for as the Philadelphia 76ers have finally pulled the trigger on firing coach Brett Brown.

Yes, after seven seasons at the helm, Brown was relieved of his duties on Monday the day after the Sixers finished off a disappointing 2019-20 season by being swept by the Boston Celtics in Round 1. It was the third straight season where the Sixers came up short in the playoffs and it was time for Brown and the organization to split.

He finished his seven seasons with a record of 221-344 guiding them to 50+ wins in the 2017-18 and the 2018-19 seasons. The team probably would have won 50+ this season as well if not for the pandemic that caused the season to go into hiatus in March.

The franchise has already identified a few candidates for the position according to The Athletic and The Stadium’s Shams Charania.

A lot of credit does have to go to Brown for the job he did as coach of the franchise. He left the San Antonio Spurs for a coaching opportunity and lost on purpose for four straight years to begin his career focused on the development of younger players before finally landing some winners in Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons as the franchise then took off.

All things must come to an even, eventually, and for Brown, this was the end of his run in Philadelphia. A lot of people will remember the failures of the 2020 playoffs, but he should be remembered for willing to lose on purpose and then guiding the franchise back to relevancy.
