Angels at Astros: Projected starting pitchers

LHP Patrick Sandoval vs. LHP Framber Valdez

Sandoval is 0-3 in four starts so far this season, pitching to a 5.40 ERA with only 14 strikeouts in 20 innings.

  • Sandoval has allowed nine earned runs in his last two starts, doubling his ERA since his first two starts of the year.
  • Last season, his first in the majors, Sandoval went 0-4 in 10 appearances (nine starts) with a 5.03 ERA.

Valdez has gotten off to a great start, going 2-2 in 5 appearances (four starts) this season with a 1.72 ERA.

  • Valdez has only allowed 27 hits and surrendered seven walks in 31 1/3 innings, good for a 1.085 WHIP.
  • In his last three starts, Valdez has allowed three runs in 20 2/3 innings (1.31 ERA) with 19 strikeouts.

Prediction

Astros 5, Angels 3

Moneyline (ML)

BetMGM’s moneyline has the Astros at -150 and the Angels +135. The Astros are understandably heavy favorites, but they’ve lost three games in a row after getting swept by the Padres.

The Angels, on the other hand, have won just two of their last 11 games and have won consecutive contests only once this year. The Astros should win this game, but I’d rather PASS on the moneyline and give up runs with the spread.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Astros to win returns a profit of $6.67.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The Astros are favored by 1.5 runs over the Angels, which carries a line of +125. That’s far more rewarding than the moneyline and this is a game the Astros should win by at least two runs.

Take the ASTROS -1.5 (+125).

Over/Under (O/U)

The O/U is 9 (Over -106, Under -115), but this won’t be an easy game to predict. The Astros’ bats have gone cold, scoring more than three runs just twice in their last nine games – two blowout wins over the Colorado Rockies.

The total has gone Under in six of the Astros’ last nine games, but it’s gone Over in eight of the Angels’ last 11. I’m inclined to take the UNDER 9 in this one as long as Sandoval doesn’t implode and Valdez pitches the way he has in his last three starts.
