Pittsburgh Steelers’ fans love to have fun on social media at the expense of wide receiver Ryan Switzer. I’ll never get the hate but those fans might have to eat their words. Reports out of training camp are that Switzer and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger are on the same page and Switzer is making plays.
Switzer dealt with injuries, poor quarterback play and a crowded wide receiver group last season. But it appears he’s healthy, has worked himself into the best shape of his career and is taking nothing for granted.
Where does Switzer fit in the Steelers offense? In 2018, the Steelers lined Switzer up primarily in the slot and a few times set him in the backfield as a running back. We’ve seen the team working some slip screens out of the backfield and this could be a place where Switzer gets work in.
But more than that, if he and Roethlisberger build a bond, Switzer could be the guy who operates in the short middle and keep the chains moving when the team throws on short yardage. Either way, based on early reports from camp of Switzer making plays, don’t be shocked if offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner doesn’t find a way to get him more involved in the offense.
