Tua Tagovailoa made a rather large impact in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, his first stop after leaving his hometown of Ewa Beach, Hawaii. Now, in Miami, he is already the talk of the town. Dolphins fans are hanging on to every word the young quarterback says and every move he makes in training camp.
Will Manso, the sports director and sports anchor for WPLG in Miami, began working with the South Florida station in Dan marino’s final season. Plenty of Dolphins fans compare the former Alabama star to the Hall of Famer, and Manso claims that he hasn’t seen the fanbase this excited about a quarterback since the ‘Marino Era.’
Tagovailoa isn’t the only former Crimson Tide star Manso follows, being from New Jersey, Manso is a self-proclaimed New York Giants fan and was ecstatic about the franchise’s decision to draft former Alabama safety Xavier McKinney in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft.
Manso has taken short clips posted to the franchise’s social media, as well as videos taken by him while reporting at training camp, and added his own commentary on top of it. He “critiques” Tagovailoa’s throws, footwork and overall athleticism in his first few practices with the NFL team.
He not only covered Tagovailoa since he was drafted No. 5 overall by Miami, but he’s also been analyzing his performance during Dolphins training camp.
Well, maybe analyzing is a loose description of what he’s doing.
“Initially, I started making them just to have fun to the fact that Tua was like the Lochness Monster, like ‘oh, we spotted Tua!’,” Said Manso. “You know, I made the first one just joking about the fact the we never really get to see him, and is he really on the Dolphins?”
Tagovailoa is not expected to be the starting quarterback to open the season, but you wouldn’t know that by hearing what Manso has to say about the young quarterback.
“He comes with that name, that image and that personality that the Dolphins haven’t seen since Marino,” Manso said. “But, from a talent perspective, if he stays healthy, there’s no way he couldn’t be special and couldn’t be a great quarterback. It’s always going to be unfair to compare him to Dan [Marino], but I think he’s the kind of guy that has the humble, but yet confident personality that can handle all the pressure that comes with being ‘the guy’ for the Dolphins.”
Let’s explore Manso’s in-depth analysis of Tagovailoa’s game:

His commentary on the first known video of Tagovailoa throwing in a Dolphins uniform is hilarious. He likens the video to the “Lochness Monster,” because it had been so long since a video of Tagovailoa throwing had surfaced. He claims to have seen enough, it’s time to start him

In this clip, Manso talks about Tagovailoa’s footwork, comping it to him dancing the salsa, and how that appropriately fits in Miami. He also has some side-by-side comparison of Tagovailoa and 2018 first-round quarterback from UCLA Josh Rosen.

He has nothing but praise for Tagovailoa’s release and even gets into Dolphins wide receiver Dante Parker’s head, saying that Parker is likely thinking, “‘Man, I’m going to have a 1,500 yard, 15 touchdown season.'”
