Broncos quarterback Drew Lock played in five games with Pro Bowl wide receiver Courtland Sutton last season but never worked with Jerry Jeudy or KJ Hamler before this offseason.
Lock and his new receivers will work to build chemistry this summer. After the first day of padded practice on Monday, Lock said the offense is getting things rolling after a long offseason break.
“I think every day that we go out, get a little bit better with timing with receivers,” Lock said. “The one thing — the big thing — is it’s been almost five, six months for a lot of us. That was the first pocket that the [quarterbacks] have been in in a long time. It’s the first time the o-line has had to take on guys fully rushing at them.
“Same thing with receivers — getting jammed up, having to run five, six routes in a row rather than routes on air where you get to chill out and have the guys in front of you take some reps. The basic thing is that this is the first time in a long time we’ve all been back out there.”
Lock said the offense is working on getting the basics down in the early days of camp. Once they have a solid foundation to work from, Lock and his teammates can hit the ground running when the regular season arrives.
“That’s what we’re trying to get better at — the basics, pocket fundamentals, the o-line doing their thing, receivers doing their thing,” Lock said. “Same with the defense. We have to get back into it and get things rolling.”
