Mariners at Rangers: Projected starting pitchers
LHP Marco Gonzales vs. LHP Mike Minor
Gonzales is off to a good start in 2020, with a 3.06 ERA across three starts, and 15 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings.
- Gonzales has been pretty fortunate so far, benefiting from a .152 BABIP. He has served up four homers already, including three in his last start, and isn’t missing many bats (8.6% swinging strike rate).
- He made five starts against the Rangers in 2019, and compiled a 4.11 ERA, with 22 strikeouts and three walks in 30 2/3 innings.
Minor was solid in his first start of the year, but has struggled in his last two, allowing 11 earned runs in 10 2/3 innings. Overall, he is sporting a 6.89 ERA, with 15 strikeouts in 15 2/3 innings.
- His velocity fell off a bit during the second half of 2019, when he recorded a 4.99 ERA in 15 starts. It’s down a couple more ticks in 2020, and he’s recorded just five swings and misses with his four-seamer through three starts.
- Minor made four starts against the Mariners a season ago. He posted a 4.50 ERA against them, but with 34 strikeouts in 24 innings. Two of the starts were early in the season when he was rolling, and he punched out 24 batters in those two outings.

Prediction
Mariners 6, Rangers 4
Moneyline (ML)
The Mariners come into this contest as road dogs, but their offense has been the better of the two so far this season (4.2 runs per game to 3.4 for the Rangers).
Judging by early-season performance, they probably have the edge in pitching as well, as Gonzales has shown he can succeed with low velocity, while Minor hasn’t proven he can do that.
The Seattle offense should be able to put some runs on the board in this contest. Take the MARINERS (+120).

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)
The Mariners enter this game at +1.5 (-182), while the Rangers are currently at -1.5 (+150). Neither side of this looks like a great value, so PASS on these lines.
Instead, consider flipping it around and taking the MARINERS -1.5 (+180) on the alternate line.
Over/Under (O/U)
Minor is a poor bet for success as long as his velocity is down this much, so the Seattle offense should have a pretty good day. On the other side, Gonzales hasn’t been quite as good as the shiny ERA would suggest, and even a struggling Texas offense should get something going against him.
The OVER 8.5 (-110) looks like a solid value here.
