Colorado State Football Now Facing Racial Allegations

More issues with Rams athletics, specifically football.

All athletic activities are stopped

This is not a good week for the Colorado State athletics department and specifically the football program.

Earlier this week, there was a report by The Coloradoan that had players in the football program, and others, come forward saying that COVID-19 protocols were not being followed. This led to president Joyce McConnell starting an investigation to get to the bottom of this.

Now, there is another serious issue that is specifically tied to the football program, and it involves “racism and verbal abuse” from staff members. This is leading to football activities being paused for the time being while looking into this and Colorado State athletics Joe Parker has started an investigation into what is going on.

Here is the full statement:

“Today, we learned of some extremely troubling allegations of racism and verbal abuse from CSU’s athletic administration generally and in the football program specifically.

Colorado State University is committed to being an anti-racist university, and we will not tolerate any behavior or climate that goes against that core value. Moreover, CSU Athletics is committed to the health and well-being of student-athletes above all other priorities, and this includes their mental health.  We believe it is our responsibility to make sure that all student-athletes feel welcomed and valued as members of an inclusive athletics community.

I have consulted with President McConnell about these new allegations, which obviously deeply concern her as well.  Effective immediately, and for the best interests of our student-athletes, I am pausing all football-related activities indefinitely.  This includes practices, workouts, and team meetings.

I have also asked President McConnell to expand the independent investigation she announced on Tuesday to include a comprehensive review of our athletic department and football program specifically related to allegations of racism and verbal abuse. While we have been working hard towards playing football this fall, the holistic well-being of our student-athletes is our unequivocal top priority.  We must and will address these allegations before we focus on playing football.”

There has to be some serious things going on that the football staff is being alleged to foster this type of environment despite not having spring football and limited interaction in-person meetings since Steve Addazio was brought on to be the head coach.

This is beyond a bad look with two serious allegations in a week for this new football staff.

Also, this is not the first time there have been racist issues at Colorado State.

Also, in the athletic department, there were issues with former basketball coach Larry Eustachy who was placed on administrative leave due to creating a “culture of fear and intimidation” and he also had a zero-tolerance policy. Ultimately, Eustachy resigned when new allegations surfaced of conduct issues with the basketball team.

The Eustachy incident and the two current issues with the football team all came under Parker’s watch, so perhaps something higher up is the issue. Parker has done the right things in all of these incidences by looking into them but there are only so many times one can look into these programs before you have to look into the mirror.
