Some rookie-on-rookie crime occurred at Kansas City Chiefs training camp on Tuesday.
Rookies were allowed to put on their helmets and padded jerseys for the first time today. The amount of work that the team could get done was limited because Kansas City doesn’t have the normal amount of rookies this offseason.
One of the things that the team was still able to work on was one-on-one drills. Two of the Chiefs’ rookie draft picks, Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Willie Gay Jr., had a chance to face off in one-on-one coverage drills. You’d think that Edwards-Helaire would have the advantage given his reputation as a pass-catcher, but Gay Jr. gave him a run for his money.

Gay Jr. is trailing in coverage and dives to break up the pass intended for Edwards-Helaire. Some pretty impressive work from the second-round pick out of Mississippi State.
This is good news for Kansas City because they’ve been sorely in need of a linebacker who can consistently cover top running backs in the league. Green Bay Packers RB Aaron Jones, for instance, caught seven passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns against the Chiefs in Week 8 last season.
Obviously, the coaching staff will want to see this happen again once the pads come on, but it’s a good sign to see this happen in shorts nonetheless.
