The newly-created NBA G League Select Team that will begin playing with the 2020-21 season will reportedly be based out of Walnut Creek, California, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

The NBA G League announced on April 16 its plans to launch a new developmental team as an alternative path for elite prospects wanting to play professionally. Five-star prospects Jalen Green and Isaiah Todd were the first two players to commit to the revamped program.

Following the additions of Green and Todd, Daishen Nix, Kai Sotto and Jonathan Kuminga joined. The NBA G League announced last week that Princepal Singh, a 6-10 forward from India, would become the first NBA Academy India graduate to sign with the team.

Under the structure of the new program, prospects will be placed on a team filled with veteran players and experienced coaches to provide mentorship throughout the season. Former NBA coach Brian Shaw was named the head coach of the NBA G League Select Team in June.

The group of prospects will participate in training and exhibition games against other G League teams and international clubs. The team will play around 10-12 games against existing G League teams in games that won’t count against the standings.

The prevailing thought was the NBA G League Select Team would be based in California to conduct its training throughout the season. The team had discussions to be based at the Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks, California, but ultimately chose Walnut Creek.
