While there’s been nothing to indicate that Michigan football is that much more of a College Football Playoff contender than in March, that doesn’t mean that the sports books haven’t increased their confidence in the Wolverines.

In March, the national championship odds for the Wolverines opened at +5000, putting the maize and blue at No. 13 overall. However, Michigan moved up in August according to BetMGM, now sitting at even odds with another nouveau pick out of the Big Ten.
While the usual suspects — Clemson, Ohio State, Alabama and Georgia — remain the top four in best odds to win college football’s national title, Michigan moved up from 13th to 9th, tied with Penn State with +5000 odds. The Wolverines are behind the aforementioned four, LSU, Florida, Notre Dame and Oklahoma in the betting odds.
The betting site, naturally, hasn’t updated its game-by-game odds, given that the schedule is entirely in flux. The Big Ten announced last month that it would move to a conference-only schedule in 2020. However, the now-canceled contest at Washington still appears on the site. Had that game taken place, BetMGM would have had Michigan as 2.5-point favorites.
