“It is what is is.”
Probably, that’s a fair assessment of what we should be thinking of Jayson Tatum’s historically bad shooting night (2-of-18 from the floor overall, and one of those makes was assigned to him after the Milwaukee Bucks tipped it into their own basket) in Friday’s close loss to the Bucks.
True, he’s been a bit…off in the scrimmage games before that as well.
But, the tentative, almost hesitant style of play he’s been demonstrating was how he was playing to start the season as well.
To be sure, Boston does not have the months of runway for the Duke product to warm up, but then there’s only been one game that actually counts, so no need to hit the panic button.

And Taco Jay isn’t.
Instead, he planned to watch some tape.
“It’s all about watching film, there’s much about what I could have done better yesterday, and [I’ll] try to implement to the next game. That’s what I’ll try to do tomorrow. You play every other day, so you always have the chance to bounce back and forget about the last.”
As head coach Brad Stevens said after the game in question, “He had a couple nights like that early in the season too; it’s the least of our concerns is him finding the net — it’s what he does.”
“He’ll be fine,” added Stevens.

As much as Boston needs Walker’s knee in good shape, they also need Tatum to play at a high level if they hope to make it more than one round into the postseason.
And while there’s not need to panic after his performance Friday, if the Missouri native continues to play in such a detached, un-aggressive way vs. the Portland Trail Blazers…
There might be.
