Padraig Harrington will be returning to the Barracuda Championship — unfortunately, fans of the three-time major champion will not be able to watch him in person this year.
Harrington is part of the 132-player field announced for the PGA Tour stop July 27-Aug. 2 at Tahoe Mountain Club’s Old Greenwood golf course near Truckee.
Harrington won three major championships: The Open Championship in 2007 and 2008 and the PGA Championship, also in 2008. He spent over 300 weeks in the top 10 of world rankings, and reached a career-high ranking of third in July 2008. From Ireland, Harrington is also captain of the European Ryder Cup team.
The Barracuda Championship is held the same week as the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational in Memphis, Tennessee. The Olympic Games men’s golf competition had been scheduled for this week before the Olympics were postponed.
Collin Morikawa, who won last year at Montreux, will be in the WGC this week.
The course: Old Greenwood is a 7,518-yard Jack Nicklaus-designed course east of Truckee. The Barracuda had been held at Montreux before club members there voted to not host it any longer.
Former winners: Several former Barracuda and Reno-Tahoe Open champions are competing again this year including Vaughn Taylor, Parker McLachlin, Greg Chalmers, Chris Stroud, Matt Bettencourt, Will Mackenzie and John Rollins.
TV only: The Barracuda Championship will be a television-only event this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You can watch it on the Golf Channel, starting at 7 p.m. ET each day Thursday-Sunday.
Exemptions: This year’s field includes exemptions for: Sahith Theegala, a member of Pepperdine’s nationally top-ranked team and winner of both the Haskins Award and Ben Hogan Award; Peter Kuest, one of the most accomplished golfers in BYU history with 10 tournament wins; and Derek Bayley, winner of the 2020 Reno Open hosted at Toiyabe Golf Club.
Tickets: If you purchased tickets to the 2020 Barracuda Championship, refunds are available or you can choose to roll over this year’s ticket purchase to the 2021 event. For any questions regarding your tickets, email info@barracudachampionship.com.
