Players across the NFL couldn’t help but be amazed by the record-setting 10-year deal that Patrick Mahomes signed with the Chiefs this week. It’s worth $450 million and comes with the most guaranteed money ever for an NFL player ($141 million), making it an unprecedented contract in this era of the NFL.
Johnny Hekker was one of the only Rams players to react to the contract in any way, and his response was predictably hilarious. With Mahomes taking up a good chunk of the Chiefs’ salary cap each year, he has an idea for how K.C. can pay the rest of its players: Trident Layers gum.
And we will build it by paying the rest of the team in trident layers. https://t.co/nOoYU6FkMd

For as massive as Mahomes’ contract is, his $45 million annual average may not seem like such a crazy number compared to other quarterbacks’ contracts. The salary cap typically goes up each year, as do contracts for quarterbacks.
Before Mahomes’ deal ends, it’s reasonable to expect someone – whether it’s Deshaun Watson, Lamar Jackson, Dak Prescott, Joe Burrow or some other quarterback – to surpass Mahomes’ average of $45 million per year.
