Report: Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs agree to 10-year contract extension

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have come to an agreement on a 10-year contract extension.

The Kansas City Chiefs are making sure Patrick Mahomes goes nowhere … until the next decade.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday the Chiefs and the Super Bowl MVP are in agreement on a 10-year contract extension that will carry the quarterback through the 2031 season. It will be the richest contract in NFL history.

The question is whether it will top the 12-year, $430 million deal The Los Angeles Angels signed outfielder Mike Trout to last season?

The 10 years does have some synergy as Mahomes was the 10th overall pick by Kansas City out of Texas Tech in 2017. He sat for most of his rookie season behind Alex Smith.

Kansas City traded Smith to Washington and Mahomes took off in the starting role in 2018. He was named the NFL’s MVP after the 2018 season when he led the NFL with 50 touchdown passes and threw for 5,097 yards.

Mahomes, 24, has thrown for 9,412 yards with 76 touchdowns and 18 interceptions in 31 regular-season games. In five playoff games, he has thrown for 1,474 yards with 13 touchdowns and two interceptions.

Mahomes’ dad, Pat, played for numerous MLB teams from 1992-2003, Over that span, he earned slightly less than $3 million. His son could eventually wind up earning close to that on a weekly basis in the NFL.
