In the wake of the Washington Redskins announcing that they will conduct a thorough review of their name on Friday morning, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that commissioner Roger Goodell is in full support of this potential change.
“In the last few weeks we have had ongoing discussions with Dan and we are supportive of this important step,” Goodell said, via Rapoport.
The commissioner may not have the sole power to make an NFL owner change his teams name, but his support for the change means a lot. If other owners band together, not to mention the numerous sponsors who have already made their opinions known, there is little that Snyder can do other than making the change.
This announcement on Friday shows that Snyder, though he may not want to, is taking the calls for change seriously, and a change is likely coming.
