As college football players make their long-awaited return to campus to prepare for the college football season, some have been met with signing a waiver in order to ensure liability is off the university.
Yes, athletes essentially are signing a contract in order to voluntary workout ahead of the 2020 football season.
Ohio State, SMU, Indiana, Iowa and Tennessee are among the football programs that have made their football players sign such waivers. Oklahoma players have returned to campus ahead of the July 1 restart of workouts for the 2020 season.
According to a report from The Athletic’s Jason Kersey, the Sooners will not have to sign a waiver of any kind ahead of voluntary workouts beginning this week.
Interesting nugget in the @OU_Football plan for student-athletes to return. An OU spokesman confirmed to me that they won't be requiring players to sign any kind of waiver before returning to campus. #Sooners pic.twitter.com/GcnZzSAeB0

These waivers provided coronavirus risks, the precautions the school has taken, the precautions the athlete should take and why you can’t come after the school if something were to happen. Oklahoma has let its student-athlete know that they can remove themselves if they are concerned or uncomfortable with COVID-19 and won’t be penalized by the team or in financial aid if they do so.
Oklahoma is still scheduled to begin the 2020 football season on Sept. 5 against Missouri State at home.
