Wisconsin Herd guard Frank Mason III, who is signed to a two-way contract with the Milwaukee Bucks, on Thursday was named the 2019-20 NBA G League Most Valuable Player, the league announced.
Following Mason, his teammate on the Herd, Jaylen Adams, finished second in the MVP voting while Boston Celtics two-way player Tremont Waters finished third. Waters was last week named the 2019-20 NBA G League Rookie of the Year.
Waters emerged as perhaps one of the top guards in the G League this season. He averaged 18 points, 7.3 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.9 steals in 36 games with the Maine Red Claws, finishing sixth in assists per game among all players and 14th in steals.
Waters helped the Red Claws finish third in the Eastern Conference with a 28-14 record. He was named the G League Player of the Month in November and previously earned a place on the 2019-20 Midseason All-NBA G League Team.
Following his impressive rookie campaign, many around the sport believe Waters will eventually earn a standard contract with the Celtics or another team in the NBA. He gave the Celtics solid play in spot situations this season and could offer that production in the future.
On June 4, the G League announced the 2019-20 season was officially canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic after the season was suspended indefinitely on March 12. The G League regular season was set to conclude on March 28.
