The Cincinnati Bengals and head coach Zac Taylor haven’t offiically named Joe Burrow the Week 1 starter.
Yet.
Sounds silly given the fact Burrow was the No. 1 pick and everything that has unfolded since, from his impressing coaches to the homecoming storyline, etc.
But Taylor himself once again confirmed he has yet to name anyone the starter under center. That said, he didn’t shy away from quickly confirming Burrow will get the first snap in a training camp, per SI’s Albert Breer:
“With that, the Bengals coach also acknowledged that, because of the relative scarcity of physical reps between now and Week 1, he and his staff will have to give the team clarity on its starting quarterback early in camp. ‘You have to. There’s no doubt, it is a unique year. That’s just the approach we gotta take. We can’t beat around the bush. We gotta get him ready.'”
The Bengals are a pretty formal team. They haven’t signed rookies yet (which isn’t a big deal). A.J. Green probably isn’t going to get an extension because, like rookies, he hasn’t been in the building.
Taylor’s continuing that a bit here by not officially confirming Burrow as the starter. But it’s not a formality that should fool anyone — he doesn’t even have another realistic option to go with under center.
On Day 1 of training camp — whenever that is — expect Taylor to name Burrow the starter.
