The Buffalo Bills defense can be described in one word: Good. If you had to choose a second, there’s a good case to be made that the would could be “young.”
MMQB’s Albert Breer tabbed the Bills as the team in the AFC East with the “brightest future” recently. Why? Defense, defense, defense. The Bills know they have a special group their, but Breer does, too.
Here’s how he describes Buffalo’s unit on that side of the ball:
The Bills have an off-the-charts 25-and-under core on defense, with defensive tackle Ed Oliver (22), linebackers Tremaine Edmunds (22) and Matt Milano (25), and corner Tre’Davious White (22) in the middle of it. I’m not sure anyone in the NFL can say they’ve got a young defensive nucleus like that to build around.
This grouping easily will have a chance to be together for the next five-plus seasons. Eventually the challenge for the Bills will be to reload this group so when these young guys are the grizzled vets, they can lead like Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer and Jerry Hughes do now.
But Breer also believes quarterback Josh Allen has a “great shot” at improving sooner rather than later. Reasons cited are his improved weapons and the team’s consistent offensive line.
But rather than the offense, it’s the Bills front office staff that also had Breer raving about Buffalo’s future. From the sidelines to the booth, he sees positive all around Orchard Park:
Coach Sean McDermott is now second in the division in playoff appearances, with two in his three years as head coach, and he’s achieved a good level of synergy with Leslie Frazier as DC and Brian Daboll as OC. Take that into the front office, and GM Brandon Beane has a strong group with respected execs Joe Schoen, Dan Morgan and Brian Gaine in the fold. And how well the ex-Panther staffmates McDermott and Beane work together is obvious.
